This hypertext, on W.H. Auden's poem "September 1, 1939", looks at the influences on the poem and some works that were inspired by it. It is not comprehensive, but examines some of the ways in which the question what is the role of art and what can it do recur between the influencing and influence works, and between Auden's own works.
One may with to begin with my critical preface. With the poem itself, it may be beneficial to begin with the version published in The New Republic in 1939, which is the version most commonly reproduced today, or with a discussion of how Auden changed the various versions of the poem.
